About Us

SMA Studio Profile Stephen Moser Architect (SMA) is an architecture and design studio based in New York City with a portfolio of innovative residences, civic-private projects, and ideas-generating competitions. Our work can be found in Colorado, Connecticut, Long Island, NYC, and Westchester County. The focus in all our projects is on making beautiful, coherent spaces that respond to the uniqueness of place, reflect and enhance how people live and work, and explore sustainable technology and materials. SMA seeks a clarity of vision: a relationship between exterior and interior that values simplicity, coherency, and openness. We value collaboration within our studio and work closely with our clients to help them successfully realize their vision, regardless of the size of their project. As a full-service architecture and design firm, we take our projects from conceptual beginning through the completion of construction. Residential projects include a house carved into the side of a mountain in the Colorado Rockies; a net-zero-energy beach house on Shelter Island, designed as a contemporary re-interpretation of a saltbox cottage; and a renovation of the mid-century modern Landsberg House on Long Island, for which SMA received an AIA award. Civic-private work: a master plan for a historic restaurant and environs, in the southeast section of NYC’s Fort Tryon Park; and a comprehensive study for SummerStage in NYC’s Central Park. Competition entries include an award-winning design for an open park in Nogales, a city divided by the U.S.-Mexico border; and a contemporary art wing for MALI, the art museum in Lima, Peru.

Steve did a great job managing our challenging home renovation project. We had several unique issues to contend with (alongside the usual ones) and I can't imagine tackling them without Steve. It was great working with Steve and his team and would do so again without hesitation. We love our "new" house!

Steve guided us through a fairly extensive renovation of our apartment, and we absolutely recommend his firm to anyone looking for an architect with creative solutions to space, a commitment to getting the details right, a conscientious work ethic and a truly gifted eye for the whole picture. Guests marvel at the innovations Steve envisioned and executed, from doors that tuck into closet spaces to luxurious cabinet space that belies the small scale of our kitchen. He took into account all of our requests and quirks and created a home that's not only functional for us but also timeless and attractive to a new owner, if anyone ever drags us out of here.

Stephen Moser Architect - Stephen served as the architect for a complete gut renovation of a 1,600 square foot apartment on the Upper West Side of New York City. He designed the conversion of a "classic six" with two bedrooms, a small maid's room and one and one-half bathrooms into a spacious three bedroom, two full bath apartment. Working extensively with a Co-op Board, NYC Landmarks, and multiple other professionals, Stephen designed and managed the installation of central air conditioning, all new windows, new sub-floor and wood floors, brand-new electrical, and the movement of plumbing throughout the apartment. He created an open kitchen, dining, and living environment that works perfectly. We can not say enough about his vision for the space, eye for materials and finish details, and ability to work with us and the contractor to get it done on time and on budget. Would highly, highly recommend Stephen to everyone.

We hired Steve Moser as an architect to redesign our ground floor, creating a "great room" out of our kitchen and dining room, and redesigning our living room, entrance and den. We could not be happier with our choice. Steve brought world-class talent to our project, and was able to produce a beautiful space with contemporary aesthetics, beautiful room-to-room flow, open space and considerably more light than we used to have. We were particularly impressed by his keen sense of aesthetics, and his ability to create a clean, modern look and feel. He was able to work iteratively with us, taking our ideas, building on them, pointing to issues and dependencies we would never have thought of and sketching out options to help us choose and zero in on the final solution. He systematically thought through every detail to support our functional needs - identified or not - and create the aesthetic experience we were looking for. It is remarkable how a different physical space can impact the family life. Rather than go to their bedroom, our teenage kids now naturally sit in the great room after school to do their homework, drawn by its open and spacious feel. I'd definitely recommend Steve to design any project, big or small.

Commented: Who did the over the mirror lighting and the sink cabinet?Yes, it's a very shallow cabinet. The vanity was custom built. The undermount sink is a Lacava Cube and the sconce above the mirror is from Restoration Hardware.
