About Us

I grew up in Orange County after my family moved in 1961 from Pittsburgh, PA. Following graduation from California Polytechnic University, San Louis Obispo in 1982 with a Bachelor of Architecture, I studied Art and Architecture from 1981 to 1982 in Florence, Italy, at the California State University International Program. After graduating college, I lived and worked in Rome, Jerusalem and San Francisco, during which time I studied art and specifically drawing with pencils. In 1987, while on a trip to San Diego, I was offered work building a house, and then work drawing for an architect, so I extended my stay again. I then met my future wife, Dijana, and we had two children, Nadia and Audrey. I have happily stayed in San Diego ever since. My work is a combination of custom contemporary homes and one of a kind wood and metal sculptures and furniture. I have worked in this business for over 20 years and successfully completed dozens of creative custom homes with individual artistic flare for modern and industrial uses of novel materials and approaches. The result is your unique home that is great both in appearance and livability. Whether you are looking to build a home from the ground up, remodel an existing space, or just make some finishing touches to bring your home together, give us a call. Steve helped us design a backyard overhand and fireplace. The project was complicated by existing improvements and the horrible San Diego building permit process. Steve found a design solution that met code, and our needs. It is beautiful.

I have known Steven Florman for over 20 years, during which I have worked for him and alongside him in the capacity of a general contractor and craftsman. I had the pleasure and honor to have him design and guide me through the construction of my own home (still in progress). In this respect Steven has always been very much hands-on, providing the client with direct guidance in every step of the project until a successful and satisfying completion has been achieved. With great passion for his profession as an innovative architect, a keen eye for detail, and the right mind to open spaces, Steven Florman is the first choice for anyone who truly values architecture as a liberating art form, as his countless architectural achievements and his uniquely beautiful art compositions bare witness.

Not only did Steve design a beautiful remodel, he was part of the process from start to finish. We had never done anything like this before and he was always available to answer a million questions we had before, during and even post construction. He is multi talented in art, architecture, construction and design.... The perfect combination for a beautiful modern house. We highly recommend him for all budgets

My husband and I had a great experience working with Steven Florman on our home. He enabled us to think outside the box but also respected our opinions. He takes great pride in his work and is a perfectionist. He thinks about how his designs will enhance our lives through comfort, ease and aesthetics. Every time someone sees our home for the first time, we hear remarks about its craftsmanship, originality and warmth. Steven Florman helped us with a major overhaul of all the public parts of our mid-century house -- kitchen, a den/family room added in the 1970s plus the dining room and living room. We wanted to maintain the bones of the house and capitalize on the indoor/outdoor feel of the large windows and open floor plan, eliminate tired out architectural features and finishes (such as paneling installed in the early 70s!), update the kitchen functionality and appliances while at the same time giving our home a decidedly contemporary outlook. In sum, we LOVE the rennovated space and still talk about how glad that we are to have done the work and that we were lucky enough to have Steven direct the design work and implementation. He was very creative in incorporating existing elements where possible in order to save budget and natural resources, which was important to us. He also helped to figure out solutions for several new components with space limitations. He was able to capitalize on the existing windows and views, while figuring out a way to add two new windows in limited space with stud/framing limits to bring in more treetop views and breeze. Aesthetically, our home is beautiful, warm and inspiring. When people come over for the first time, they always remark about the beauty of the design work and combinations of stone and stone.

I worked with Steve on the remodel of my home. It came out exceptionally well from a look, feel, and live-ability perspective. In addition to a wonderful final product, Steve was kind, easy to work with, professional, always on time with his deliverables, and well organized. I would enthusiastically recommend Steve for any projects that you are considering.

After reviewing previous Florman Architects projects, we hired them to master plan and design a difficult project in Balboa Park. Steven was able to to listen to the ideas of many people involved in the project and develop a quick and creative solution that is able to be implemented in stages. We used Steven Florman for our kitchen remodel. His designs were not only beautiful but extremely functional. He purposely chose varying work surface heights in order to accommodate different tasks as well as user heights. He chose finishes that blended but also stood out on their own such as unique woods.

Steve is very creative and will work with you to get what you want. He listens to what you have to say and incorporates those ideas into the design. He goes over the design in great detail and explains why things will work or won't work. Steve really helped us see the vision in the completed project. Not to mention he is also an artist in woodworking and metals. We would highly recommend him for your future project.

Creative, talented, solution-oriented. Steven modernized what started as a basic ranch house, turning it into a modern home with a truly spectacular kitchen, employing almost 20 different types of wood in his creation of sculptural cabinetry. Through his adept choreography, he created a wonderful flow for entertaining, while providing privacy where needed. I would not hesitate to employ his services again.

We hired Steve to design and supervise construction for a project to remove a structural wall and merge two smaller rooms into one larger one. During the design phase we saw the need to make improvements in several additional rooms and bring other areas up to code. The project came in on budget, and after two years we still love the changes which make our home so much nicer. We also love his suggestion to put trees in front of the side windows so we look out at them instead of the neighbors side wall.
