The building / construction process in California is totally over-regulated. Not only will you have to spend a shocking amount of money asking for permission to build on your own land, there are a myriad of regulations and conditions to work through. Needless to say it is most unpleasant dealing with slow government bureaucracy, which then sub-contracts the work to third-party agencies and makes the process even more convoluted. Thamby Kumaran of Kumaran Design is someone you definitely want in your corner. He was responsive and patient throughout the three year process. There were many issues that came up and we always found the best way to address and resolve them. Thamby worked with me on the design, drawings and plans. I highly recommend his services.

Alexander Barangan

We hired Kumaran Design to work with us on an 800 square foot additional dwelling unit (ADU) on our property in Felton. This square footage was determined by the county's regulations on ADU size for our parcel size. We had concerns early on that we wouldn't be able to build the home we needed within 800 square feet as we had hoped to have 2 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. I couldn't be happier with the design that Thamby came up with and the clever ways that he made the most out of the square footage. He presented us with several concepts and patiently worked with us as we narrowed our focus and came to a final decision. He is a creative problem solver with a keen eye for both aesthetics and functionality.

Thamby created a more solid, beautiful, functional and legal space than my imagination had been mulling over for years. All of my individual preferences and ideas were considered and incorporated. After 30 years of an idea in my head it is almost unreal to have it take shape in reality, and I didn't expect to be this pleased with the result. Very exciting. Makes me want to do more! Our job was to clear are a red tag for a garage that was converted to an ADU without a permit. Thamby inspected the building and then advised us on how to proceed with the county and then produced the drawings for our submission. Though we have not yet received our permit we have cleared what we considered by far the major hurdles and Thamby's efforts have invaluable and very cost effective.

We first hired Thamby Kumaran to design and remodel our home in Lafayette in 1994. He not only paid attention to the functionality of the rooms, but also insured that he brought the outside and inside into harmony. We spent hours figuring out odd problems and Thamby taught me that if the answer didn't feel right that we should keep working until something made more sense. He is incredibly patient and calm and brought in sub-contractors that were equally easy to work with. Seven years later, in 2001, when we purchased a tear-down and planned to build a 5000 square foot home, Thamby was our first choice. He designed and helped us build our dream home.

I am a builder who has relocated from the East coast and had hired Thamby Kumaran to do the design work on renovating a house we purchased for myself and my family in Bonny Doon, Santa Cruz, CA. Thamby was excellent in the design and planning of the project and was also very helpful with his trade personel recommendations. Thamby was very fair with his fee and was timely in all aspects of his work. It was a pleasure to work with Thamby and I highly recommend him.

I highly recommend Thamby Kumaran of Kumaran Design. When I initially met with him, he was very attentive to my ideas and needs, and he respectfully and patiently guided our ideas for our kitchen and dining room remodel into a superior plan. He has also advised me, step-by-step, through the construction process as I did much of the work myself. He also recommended an excellent plumber for work I could not do myself. Through all this he has been most kind, patient, and respectful. His work is top notch. His fees are very reasonable.

Creativity and attention to detail is how I would describe Kumaran Design. They helped bring to fruition our remodeling and home extension project! He very attentively listened to our wishes and requirements, thought about them and then offered creative ideas that were both aesthetically pleasing and very practical for daily living. He also has great attention to detail - our plans had everything laid out in such precise detail that it eliminated any guesswork for the general contractor and us..... which in turn ensured things were built how we had envisioned. His knowledge and experience is very extensive and was a great pleasure to work with.

Kumaran Design created an upscale shop design for me. It is passive solar, Insulated, cement tile roof, stucco - very nice shop. He was very helpful whenever we had any kind of question or needed referrals and/or technical advice. His plan was innovative and very functional. It is cool in summer and warm in winter and a pleasure to work in. I would recommend Kumaran Design to anyone who wants a well thought out design concept with the best follow through possible.

Thamby at Kumaran Design worked in consultation with my wife and me to develop a remodel design for our home. He was patient, attentive, insightful and encouraging while displaying an excellent sense of both the artistic and functional use of space in guiding us through the process of redesigning our home. I have worked with him on other projects as well, and this thoughtfulness and sensitivity is a trait he carries through with all of his work.

Thamby Kumaran really listened to us and took note of our family's lifestyle. This enabled him to design our remodel in a way that ended up working perfectly for us. He also helped us balance features against cost, so we got the maximum for our remodeling dollars. Two thumbs up -- way up!

Commented: RemodelThanks for the compliment. The cabinets are vertical grain fir, custom made. The floors are also fir. To match and integrate with the dining, living and entry area fir flooring.

Commented: I like the floor.The flooring is reused and new 2" wide, 1/4" + thick red oak strip flooring. It is face nailed to the underlayment. Lengths are random. Grade would be today's equivalent of #2 common. Sawing...

Commented: Who did the tile work?The tile setter is retired now, living in Fort Madison, Iowa. There should be a number of excellent tile setters in Santa Cruz. Check with the Guild.
