“François is our architect and has been planning our house with us from the ground up. We wanted a very contemporary, ADA compliant single story house, with some very unique design features. François was (is) a pleasure to work with, he understood our desires and translated our vision onto paper pretty quickly. We went through several renditions and got the final design completed within our budget. The house is mostly self sufficient with grid tied solar, geothermal and rainwater collection as our utilities and a very tight envelope for overall efficiency. François' expertise and understanding of these features made it possible to have all of them fully integrated from the beginning. Detail design, including building orientation, roof overhang etc. were calculated by him, and virtually modeled so we could see for ourselves how the sun would affect our quality of life. We are currently in the building phase; François attends all construction meetings and comes up with great solutions should the contractor run into a problem. He has a great eye for details and we almost exclusively rely on his insights and recommendation, from finishes over colors to fixtures, and a good understanding of your personal taste. As an example, when we decided to have some brick accent walls, he worked diligently on finding us the brick we imagined, but had not seen anywhere. When he finally showed us the sample we were looking exactly at what we had been describing to him from look, color and type of finish. As a person, François is easy to communicate with, replies to inquiries in a timely manner and listens well to your concerns or opinion. He will speak his opinion, but in a manner that you have the room to weigh his input and it is OK with you not following his recommendation. He also explains his suggestions or decisions clearly at a level of complexity that meets your level of understanding.”

We wanted a project that would incorporate the details that we loved from our old house with smart, energy efficient construction and a contemporary layout suitable for our growing family. We found that Barley & Pfeiffer as a firm provided all the skills we needed to come out at the end with the house we wanted. Alan's design skills, Peter's building science knowledge, and Scott's detailed project management work all combined to give us a beautiful house that works really well for our family, has very low maintenance requirements, and consumes dramatically less energy than most other houses, both of a similar size and much smaller.
