Tom Wilson Architect

I have had the pleasure of a four-year association with Tom, during which he has completed a difficult project to the highest level. I initially made contact with Tom in 2015, to investigate the possible restoration of a large federation home in the inner bayside area of Melbourne. Tom brought four decades of experience working in both period restorations and public projects. The project had many technical challenges, including a prolonged lead-up, where structural investigations were carried out and plans repeatedly modified and refined. As with all architects, a close involvement of the client in all aspects including plans and budget is a must, and in this case, paid off well. Tom exercised his exhaustive knowledge of period architecture and building regulations and his extensive network of contacts in the industry to bring the house from a derelict condition back to its former glory. His follow-up at the completion of the building phase has also been excellent, fixing loose ends. Tom has been a trustworthy and reliable advocate of the client during negotiations at all phases of the project. I heartily recommend him for any renovation project, large or small.

Tom designed a substantial extension to our period home in Canterbury. His work exceeded our expectations. The design was totally consistent with the original features of the home. From the outside it was near impossible to tell what was original and what was new. On the inside, original period features blended seamlessly with everything you would expect in a modern home. Tom’s attention to detail was flawless. However, what impressed us the most was the peace of mind in having Tom deal with the builder and suppliers. He sourced materials and fittings and always negotiated a good price. Having someone like that represent us was priceless.

I engaged Tom for what I thought was a straight forward job, a BBQ Shelter. Well it wasn't straight forward and thankfully I had Tom to manage the entire process from concept to completion, including Council negotiation and selection of engineers and construction contractor.

I had the good fortune to use the services of Tom more than once. First for a grand old Victorian house, Talandoon, in Hawthorn, and then for my present abode, a chalet-type wooden house in Hawthorn again which I have been renovating on and off for 6-7 years. I found Tom always ready and teeming with good ideas, unfailingly patient with my changes of heart, and especially adept at keeping the builders on the straight and narrow.
