Zealsea Timber Flooring

Great product, engineered french oak timber flooring. Can't get much better than the real thing. Great workmanship and attention to detail. Very clean and professional. Turns up on time. If you want a great looking floor, highly recommended.

I was given sound advice in choosing a flooring with a wide range of products and prices available. I found all employees to be polite and efficient in their work. The team started the job earlier than anticipated knowing I was waiting to move in. I loved that following the job completion I was emailed care and maintenance information. The floors are beautiful, I could not be happier with the finish- thanks Val and Oleysha!

There are two aspects to a review of this nature. The firm itself, its service, professionalism and the product supplied. For the former we got reasonably good advice, friendly and Zealsea were helpful with the builder. Builder was difficult with Zealsea and they persevered with him very well. From a client's point of view a good business to deal with. Perhaps the only issue was they were a bit thin on the product details, and there is a reason for this. 4 stars for service, professional dealing. Would have been 5 if they had been frank about issues with the boards. We choose a 4mm engineered Oak for upstairs flooring. The product comes with a 10 year guarantee against structural failure etc. The Timber wholesaler, product supplier is Preference Floors. Cost $17, 300 . Upstairs is where our main kitchen is along with lounge, dining, 3 bedrooms & a study. 2 bathrooms porcelain tiled. We went for engineered timber because of its durability, ability to accept floor / house movement. Laying. The substrate the engineered timber sat on was the 3/4 inch 19mm particle board flooring. Standard in most houses these days. It is supposed to withstand 6 months of the elements and still retain its integrity. Before laying the floor installer swept the floors. The Rep for Preference floors initially said there should have been an epoxy coating put down before the glue. He then retracted that view when I told him that did not occur and said that really was just for concrete flooring. It was not a raised floor. The particle board substrate was not sanded prior to gluing. The particle board had been laid down for some 4 if not 5 months with sanded timber, dirt etc ingrained from builders workings. The adhesive used was a top quality Sika. A sine wave pattern covered say 80-90% of each board's width along its length. The boards were then strapped together to tighten its lateral cohesion. Shiplapped. When finished it looked very good. Zealsea double checked with builder, ensured mouldings were correct between boards and other fittings. After 9 months use we noticed splits in the oak at the end of some of the boards. 4 first off, then another 4. We also noticed several squeaks in higher traffic areas. Called Zealsea and they immediately contacted the wholesaler of the timber, Preference Floors. The Rep came out smartly within 2 days. Where the difficulty lies is what a warranty means and is worth. Our contention was that some of the floor boards had split, and indeed, more continued to split varying in length from a couple of cm's to up to say 30 cm. The product Rep's view is that the board needs to be split right through all its layers for the split to be considered a structural and therefore warranty failure requiring replacement. Certainly this was not the case. It was only the top, visible oak layer that had split. Nonetheless, this is the issue. I asked Zealsea about the timber's wear and durability. Strong product, they haven't had issues plus it has a 10 year warranty. Unless you know what to ask this generalised answer from Zealsea seems to be satisfactory but really wasn't. In reality, pumping the product Rep and the floor layer who also came back, both said they were repairing floors earlier in the day of the same product. Again gently pumping the Rep and the floor layer it seems this is the major issue with these Chinese engineered floor boards and the splitting is more frequent than indicated by Zealsea when I inquired about the product. The product Rep saying that the floorboards were not structurally compromised and not requiring replacement is understandable but to my mind still represents product failure in some form as the boards did split. Both the Rep and the floor layer (over different boards) pulled out a tool that forced a hot wax (I believe it was a was a very hard wax and not a resin - happy to stand corrected) into the split. This reduced the visible appearance of the split and it was stated provided some resistance to the split increasing in length. My problem is how long is this going to continue. Each couple of months I find a couple more split boards. Interestingly enough in traffic areas and not under dining table, chairs or sofas. Whilst it is fit and proper the product supplier has rectified to a degree the problem - frankly it is one that should not have arisen in the first place. The process for rectifying the squeaky noises was by injecting a PVA adhesive. It was only partially successful. The failure rate in the lounge, kitchen area is less than 3%. That is not a bad outcome. The boards themselves have worn well with the surface coatings remaining intact and durable. I probably would purchase these boards again but would definitely ensure a better preparation of the particle board before laying the engineered boards. I would be prepared to spend more for the 6mm Oak and give that a shot next time but one hasn't the knowledge, experience or can determine from the industry if that would rectify the end splitting. Overall, quite satisfied with the product where it hasn't split. Looks good wears very well but the question mark over excellence is the split boards, and whether this continues.

We looked closely at four Bamboo flooring installers, and decided to work with Zealsea timber Flooring for a number of reasons. Firstly, Val’s open and friendly manner put us completely at ease and we felt he was totally trustworthy, (unlike some heavy handed sales people we all meet from time to time). We were further impressed by his knowledge of the product, and the way he guided us to make the right choice for our new home, explaining everything in detail and being patient with our many questions. Val and his team arrived on time, and the boys worked through a full day, and half of the next, to complete the job. They were all polite and friendly, and the floor…Spectacular. We had Champagne Bamboo throughout the house, with a dark contrast Bamboo in the gallery; it looks just as good as we imagined it, if not better. The flooring has been down now for a week and a half now, and I have to say, I can find nothing to fault. The trims and edgings simply blend in with the rest of the floor, and the overall finish is far superior to any of the display homes that we have looked at over the past 12 months. We would highly recommend Zealsea, the price was competitive and the outcomes amazing.
