About Us

Special Things is a small volume producer of high quality furniture and home wares, suited to small or large spaces and lifestyle of modern home and apartment living. Our pieces are finely crafted from quality materials into designs that are refined and functional, yet offer a unique personal style. After 21 years in business, we have accumulated a range of commercial and private clients seeking a unique style in furnishings and accessories, like Mercedes Benz Australia, the Education Department of Victoria and the ACT Private Hospital, of just a few. A philosophy of quality with a balance of innovative design, technology and function sees us producing a variety of beautiful items that can enhance you everyday living. Colin Whitehead is the creative force behind Special Things. He has qualifications in furniture design and interior design. His exceptional ability saw him win the silver medal ( the highest award ) for the most outstanding in his trade of chair and couch making. He also took out the bronze medal category for craftsmanship.

Special Things made an island surround for my large kitchen island. It houses all my glass wear and spices.The workmanship is outstanding. The time line was meet as on time. I would highly recommend to any one looking for a good quality piece of furniture.

Owning an apartment means making use of the space available We used Special Things to design an office space inside a second bedroom to make it multi-use. We had seen other modern modular fittings that had been done and felt that with their innovation that they would provide us with an appropriate design. The result was what we had visualised with both design and workmanship to the highest quality. We were very happy with finished result and have no hesitation in recommending their work.

Colin at Special Things is a highly skilled craftsman, his work is of the highest quality with exceptional attention to detail. Colin works with you to realise your vision, considering the space and room proportions (I wanted functional storage in a compact space, while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing addition to the room). I have engaged Colin several times and am always confident that I will be very happy with the finished product. If you want bespoke cabinetry and furniture I highly recommend Colin at Special Things.

We have worked with Colin and Lloyd from Special Things for the last 2 years whilst we completed our house building project. Colin's expertise in furniture and interior design, and his ability to deliver crafted pieces which improve not only the beauty of our interiors but also the functional aspects of our home, has been invaluable in the completion of our new home. He has made many pieces for our project and we have many more planned. His attention to detail in every thing he creates results in a piece which not only features the latest european designer look, but uses modern functional hardware, resulting in a furnishings which will last a lifetime . Colin has an ability to understand the requirements of his clients, and work with our ideas, advise where necessary and a capacity to create bespoke pieces, of versatility and individuality, working with us to bring our ideas to a form which has always exceeded our expectations.

A small kitchen refurbishment in a country house. The brief was to bring the kitchen up to date with an adjacent living room extension on a circa 1980 house with a budget that couldn't stretch to a brand new kitchen. Colin at Special Things looked at the kitchen and suggested cladding the sides of the cupboards (which were woodgrain finished, looking very dated). He chose a fabulous colour which complemented the yellow laminex bench top and the existing wall tiles, and wood grain flooring, and when installed made the kitchen pop. The colour is a steel grey/green. My view is that he was able to transform the look of the kitchen from something 35 years old to something very modern without replacing the entire joinery. He completed the installation in one day and I am extremely happy with the results, I could not fault the finish. I would have no hesitation in recommending him and Special Things to anyone for this type of cosmetic work, or a much larger refurbishment, or anything in between.

Colin at Special Things is a highly skilled craftsman. The furniture he produces is of the highest quality. Communicate your specific requirements and Colin easily converts them into your vision with attention to detail. You will receive a fixed price quote so there's no surprises when the payment is due. It's also great to be able to visit his showroom and workshop to see first hand finished products. I've had several works by Colin including cabinetry requiring sliding doors, opening doors, lift up doors and shelving. One of the works required a fireplace installation and lighting. The projects have not only enhanced the rooms but function seamlessly. The latest work by Colin was a dining table, I won't hesitate to engage Colin for my next project.
