We feel so lucky to have engaged Skookom as our builder. No build is stress-free, especially during COVID, with constantly rising pricing and unreliable supply chains but Skookon just made it work. Ian, Elise, the Skookom staff and the subcontractors they engaged were always a pleasure to work with, and nothing was too much trouble. Skookom got to know who we were and they quickly understood what we wanted to build and how we wanted to live in it. When a problem came along, the solutions they provided always had this in mind, often making the build even better. We are thrilled with the result.

Skookom built a gem for us in the Huon Valley. Their task was to build a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom holiday home on a hill overlooking the Huon river. From the design stage until completion the entire process was flawless. The architect, Peter Liddington, used his architectural skills and imagination to design a gem. The entire Skookom team led by Ian and Elise Simondson are perfectionists. The construction manager, Jib Miller, was always on hand to answer any of our requests and queries. The 18 month build was a fixed cost quote and there were no surprises! We are from Sydney and could not enter Tasmania for the final 6 months of the build because of the pandemic. Jib Miller and Ian Simondson would send us regular photos, videos and updates. We arrived in Tasmania the day after Tasmania opened its borders to NSW (16 December 2021) to a wonderful surprise! Skookom for us represents outstanding workmanship, integrity, and decency. We highly recommend them for any future clients.

If you are lucky enough to get Skookom to take on your dream home creation, consider yourself lucky indeed! Our experience adding onto our 1920s home in Hobart was made as unstressful as they could make it from the very start. Ian was very upfront about everything from the very first meeting, making it clear that the Skookom way was to build to last, attention to detail and quality throughout. Everything was estimated up front and Ian made many visits and iterations as we worked to deliver the best project possible within our budget. Throughout the build (all during COVID lockdown I might add), we had a dedicated team that never disappeared to other jobs, were approachable and all very interested in delivering the best outcomes (even co-designing mid-build to take advantage of unique opportunities to improve the outcome while minimising costs to do so). Our core team of Kai, Tony and Cam were a delight to have on-site (important as we were living in the front half of the house and stuck working from home with them throughout the build!!!). Skookom also understood and embraced our sustainability ethos -- including being careful with removed bits so they could be re-used in the project or by us later in other projects, being good about using the right types of products and not substituting inferior options, and ensuring the build was properly sealed. Measurements and accuracy are another forte of theirs - amazing really how they were able to line everything up to a wonky old house that did not have much square or level going for it. Elise has a fantastic eye for design and finish and is very sharing with her expertise. The only unfortunate thing was that some of the team had to leave to start another job in the last fortnight given there were only small projects left to finish and there was a little pressure to wrap it up. We are delighted with the home they created with us and we loved having the whole team over for a thank you BBQ some months later, once we got some of the landscaping projects done that were on our list to do. Would've loved to have them do that as well in the end :)!

Our renovation was a significant gut and rebuild as well as a second floor addition to our California bungalow house. We aimed for a reno that was comfortable and workable into our dotage. Ian recommended an architect who would deliver on our wishes. As seasoned renovators we braced ourselves for the ups and downs of the journey. The overall design scheme which has been delivered consists of logical, spacious, streamlined, and attractive spaces. Indeed, the bathroom space in the Master Suite has won an award, in recognition of the clever configuration and streamlined finish to a multi-angled space. The Skookom team honoured our wish to repurpose dismantled bricks and timber which they used to create our favourite space, the kitchen. We scraped paint off bricks to leave them exposed and used roof rafters to make a timber waterfall island bench and a barn door for the pantry. Everywhere precision and high quality finishes have been delivered. Our ongoing input was sought on design and detail. For example, during the demolition phase, nooks and crannies were identified and brought to our attention by Jib, the foreman. Through consultation with Jib we incorporated these spaces into useful, hidden storage. When the rainstorm hit Hobart in May 2018, when our roof was off, a small section of ornate cornice was destroyed. With no replacement available on the market, Jib turned up a few days later with a new piece of cornice – he had created a mould and made new cornice. Jib and his team, in consultation with Ian, solved all the inevitable renovation challenges that emerged throughout the build. The attitude throughout was, think the problem through and come up with a workable and attractive solution as agreed by all. We are very happy with our ‘new’ home and grateful to the intelligent, hardworking and skilful Skookom team. BecknBob

They supported us in achieving a design that was build-able for our sloping site and helped us get the important sustainability elements into our build within our budget. We always hear people say that the construction phase of building a house is highly stressful. After a difficult 2 years plus preparing my Virgin bushland originally granted to George Flexmore, son of 1st fleeters & born on Norfolk Island where my convict ancestors were also, I came to Skookom as I heard they were perfectionists & very honest! Ian & Elise were very easy to communicate with & after a literally rocky start with foundations on my sloping land everything fell into place very quickly. Kai & his team under guidance of Jib were very easy to work with & their work was meticulous, with obvious pride in everything they did. Skookom helped us navigate our renovation journey and ultimately achieve our vision. The process was smooth and organised. Despite an initially overwhelming number of decisions which needed to be made we enjoyed the process and always felt very supported. Ian and Elise worked closely with us from concept design to finished product. The timeline was clear and accurate from the beginning and we felt that two way communication occurred easily and regularly throughout the project. Our onsite team worked to a very high standard. The work site atmosphere was warm and friendly but efficient. We couldn’t be happier with the end results and would recommend the Skookom team without hesitation.

My family and I just moved back into our home, superbly renovated by the Skookom Team. My home was built in the 1920's and needed an extra bedroom and a bit of a revamp, with the end results far exceeding my expectations. The whole process was seamless - with no problems, only solutions! The Skookom secret, I think, is in the quality of their team members.
