Dirty Girl Designs was established in Newcastle in 2002. We are Landscape Designers with our studio located on the shores of beautiful Swan Bay Lake Macquarie, providing services to Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. We provide horticultural advice and garden and landscape design and construction related services to both the residential and commercial sectors. Our main focus is always to improve your quality of life in a garden that not only you love, but your family and friends love too! We’re often asked about our name - Why 'dirty girl designs'? The answer is simple; “Because I like to be involved in the physical construction of your design - especially in the finishing touches that make all the difference. Whilst providing construction project management services I prefer to plant and light your garden myself – personally.” Susan Crichton-Walsh, Principal and Landscape Designer, dirty girl designs. Our service offering is ‘boutique’ in both character and nature meaning all designs are customised to meet your landscaping needs and lifestyle commitments by embracing flexibility, personalised service and technology. We adopt a professional, highly collaborative approach to working with our clients and have developed a unique, and enjoyable, approach to consultation and design. We also value continuing professional development and actively participate in industry hosted educational programs, personal research, and study and attendance at conferences domestically and overseas on a regular basis. Sue transformed a small baron area that was never used to an area that is used everyday. Very professional with excellent tradesmen. We have a small yard and yet Sue made it resort like with swim spa, lounge and dining areas. A beautiful shade tree with fire pit that is also a coffee and tepanyaki bbq. So pleased with the results. Thank you Dirty Girl Designs.

I engaged Dirty Girl Designs to design and project manage the landscaping of my courtyard last year and it has been a difficult experience for me. I had notification of works commencing in my courtyard less than 24 hours before they commenced. I had little time to consider the budget proposed, and wasn't advised that certain features would cost extra I.e. Garden bed capping) . My budget was overrun and very rare updates were provided on the status of my budget and that I was nearing cost overrun. I expressed concern about the cost of certain items and was assured that my budget could accommodate. When raising concerns, they were often met with unnecessary defensiveness. My courtyard is still unfinished due to an ongoing dispute regarding expensive tiles that were delivered in a light grey colour and not black as ordered. Dirty Girl Designs are claiming that they are the correct colour and once a 'special' sealant is applied the colour will be apparent. I wasn't advised that such a sealer was to be applied at all. The matter is currently being pursued through Fair Trading and may proceed further if a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached.

From the beginning of our first two hour free consultation we realised how professional Dirty Girl Designs is. The quality of that first interaction continued throughout the project and we learned a lot from Sue, her passion enthusing us when the trials and tribulations of building can easily get to you. My partner and I both now have a far greater appreciation for the complexities of interior design. Sue enabled us to navigate decisions as they needed to be made, educating us about such major concepts such as lighting, flow and spatial planning. In retrospect we had no idea when we confidently thought we did! Sue saved us from making expensive errors that we would have to live with or correct at great expense. We are both so grateful of the time and effort she put in to explaining in layman terms for our benefit. We have no hesitation in recommending her for a building project big or small.

Sue is a true professional. I found working with Sue to be both easy, comfortable, friendly and very rewarding. Sue presents a very calm, confident and professional attitude when dealing with clients and trades people. She can head off any problems or confrontations before they arise. It was amazing what Sue did with my backyard. Taking my few suggestions and desires and transforming it into a livable and happy space to be in. Sue was able to design, build and deliver within budget and deadlines. Sue allowed me the freedom to participate as much or as little as I was capable during the whole process. Just recently Sue was able to act on my behalf with some faulty lighting even though our time together had finished well over a year ago. That's how much Sue believes in her work and company. I would whole heartedly recommend Sue and her company to all.

Dirty Girl Designs came and re changed my thoughts on landscaping my back yard which was fantastic as I had struggled with it for years Their approach and professionalism was outstanding and saw the job from concept to completion and over saw the tradesmen on the job which were just as good. Nothing was too hard and Sues approach was direct which was need on the job Cant recommend high enough

Sue was a delight to work with in assisting me with my retaining wall and fencing design. She was very helpful with lets say a difficult situation regarding the dispute between myself and the neighbour. She completed the full design within the tight time frame that was required. I would recommend anyone looking for drafting and landscape design to talk with her and i will be using her again for any of this type of work i have in the future.
