About Us

Hivemind is a cooperatively-owned general contractor based out of West Philadelphia, specializing in high-end residential construction and fabrication. We are a group of artists and craftspeople who came together through a mutual interest in creating beautiful, lasting work in a company setting that is fair and fulfilling for workers at all levels. We seek projects of unique and deliberate design, projects that demand exceptional craftsmanship, and projects incorporating green practices and technologies. We offer full-service project management, and whether you are working with an architect or starting from scratch, we guide clients through design, budgeting, permitting, and construction. We also are happy to travel for the right project, particularly if it's in a beautiful place. If you are considering a new custom home within 200 miles of Philadelphia, we would love to work with you to design and build it!

Hive Mind was introduced to Passive House Standard on our historic retrofit. Cleaning up after an errant contractor, HiveMind completed reconstructing a 2 story bay to Passive House specifications. They were eager to learn and take on a challenge, I gave them their initial training, but their commitment led them to take the certification course and test. They have since earned their CPHB- certified Passive HosueBuilder training- a great feat for any serious contractor. Additionally, they did the millwork on our 2nd-floor luxury apartment. Since I've used them with other clients. We love their intelligence, passion, and skill. We love the co-ed group and their collaborative work ethic. They listen to great music while working, make great food on the job, and have a culture of quality that is laudable. I endorse them wholeheartedly. The people at Hivemind were a real delight to work with. (How often do clients miss their contractors after the work is finished?) Their creativity and spirit of collaboration made our months-long project a pleasure, even though we had no kitchen! They are professional, inventive, reliable, conscientious . . . . the list of good qualities goes on. And, of course, they do beautiful work.

Michael and Hivemind helped me design and build a brand new kitchen in an old house. They worked with me every step of the way, helping to guide design but also listening to my ideas. They also helped me stay pretty close to my budget. I would highly recommend them.

We hired them to redo 2 bathrooms in our house, including design work and demolition. The project included taking out a wall, moving some plumbing around, a window replacement, moving a door, and some beautiful custom woodworking. They were excellent from beginning to end, making some smart and thoughtful design suggestions while also giving us what we were looking for, helping us choose tile and fixtures, and even giving us some tile from a personal project that worked even better than what we selected. The workers were 100% trustworthy and conscientious about being in our space during the work, and were always responsive to our questions and concerns.

We had both our master bathroom and our kitchen completely renovated. Our old house required a lot of creative problem solving. The workmanship is outstanding, and we could not be happier with the process and the result. It was a real pleasure to work with the Hivemind team and we are looking forward to future projects.

Our construction firm hired Hive Mind, who rescued this bay restoration and exterior window trim from a no-show sub-contractor. The project is a Passive House and required a higher level of attention to air-sealing and insulation than typical. It also has a historic designation and its requirements. The co-ed team was a pleasure to work with and were eagar to learn about Passive House Standard. They are smart, skilled and listen to great music.
