House for GOA

The Client’s brief for this holiday home on the Sunshine Coast called for an interpretation of contemporary Balinese architecture. Having travelled widely and being regular guests at many of Bali’s best resorts, the Client was keen to explore and exploit the characteristics offered by the sub-tropical architecture of South-East Asia in a local setting.

The existing house on the site was partly demolished and reworked with the new elements being built on the existing footings. The fan-shaped site, narrow at the street front opening out onto a canal to the rear, allowed for the planning to create two wings branching out to either side of a central arcaded court space. Taking reference from a number of traditional architectural influences, this courtyard space, with its carved columns and timber framed and shingled roof, becomes the focus for living spaces over the two levels of the house.

Upon entering the house the view is extended out over a central pond in the arcaded court to a “wet edge” swimming pool which abuts the canal beyond. The use of water and landscaping was an important part of the brief which has been utilized to enable a sense of openness on the relatively compact site. All internal spaces open out onto the central court via large sliding glass doors which fold away into carefully concealed recesses allowing the house to effectively become a single space at the ground level.

Using an existing house as a starting point, the intention was to create a contemporary “barefoot” holiday house open to the elements and influenced by a “Bali” sensibility to lifestyle. Combining this approach to climatic response with the utilization of a “craft” ethos to materials and detailing, the resultant house is one of great intricacy and uniqueness.
