O'Hare House

The brief for this house requested generous living and entertaining spaces that took maximum advantage of the spectacular treed hillside site. The principal strategy was to string the primary spaces along a strongly defined north-facing platform and under a gently curving ‘butterfly roof.’ The materiality of the construction was used to reinforce the sense of the living on a cliff edge under a timber parasol. The house was built on and around the white block base and walls - the walls ordering the plan and rising up to a constant datum, anchoring the building to the site and defining outdoor spaces. With the exception of the clearing created at the entry the walls rise directly out of the native bush. The plywood lined ceiling extends from inside to out independent of the line of enclosure and sweeps up to take in the trees and sky. The narrow building section maximizes cross ventilation and transparency from entry to trees beyond.

A large deck cantilevers out beyond the ‘cliff’ and roof line into the trees allowing for both summer and winter occupation. Direct connection between the deck and kitchen is enabled by windows which slide away. Opposite the deck a strongly grounded and contained yoga and meditation room pushes out into the landscape in contrast to the decks exposure. Adjacent to the deck a hermetic room for lounging in front of the fire and TV watching is provided as another alternative to the open spaces of the house. The sense of being perched on a cliff edge is continued in the outdoor shower area associated with the ensuite. The site awaits landscaping and possibly a lap pool to complete the relationship between house, entry garden and existing bush.
