Terrace in Carlton

Our client for this project came to us looking for ideas on how to update and improve her two storey period terrace house in Carlton.

Renovated and extending in the late 1970’s using mainly glass panels, the compact home would have been state of the art at the time, but the weather over the years had worked its way into the timber framed windows and ceiling, and the once impressive glass upper storey was now an accident waiting to happen.

Our client needed to completely re-do the upper floor extension, including re-fitting the existing ensuite and giving the downstairs area a general ‘spruce up”.

After preparing a few concept sketches for her consideration, she selected her favourite one, which included re-locating the existing staircase and maximising space in the small kitchen. Replacing all the upper floor glazing units enabled us to re-roof the upstairs, blocking out the harsh sun, while allowing us to carefully frame the upper floor views – blocking out neighbouring properties and maximising the gorgeous views through the established trees into the garden below.

The builder on this project was also a superstar, who made great on-site decisions, and gave the client excellent advice, including recommending to her that she alter our staircase balustrade design from plasterboard to glass. This idea has really opening up both the living area below and brought more light into the stairwell, and taken the staircase to a whole new level of “WOW”!

From Julia recently -

“Hope you are well and a bit of feedback on the reno about things that haven't worked - there is absolutely nothing!! I wouldn't change a thing. I still marvel at the space in my pantry.

But the best bit is the light through the light well onto the breakfast nook - I do the crossword in the papers at the table every Sunday and each time I marvel at the amount of light I get. (I'm sitting in the sun! In the house! Not something I'd experienced in the kitchen).

That was a stroke of genius from you.

Thank you “

Relocating the staircase has improved the space and functionality of the kitchen and living area of this terrace house. The glass feature wall is the hero and the storage under the staircase provides great functionality.
