My Houzz: Natural Beauty and Art in the Adelaide Hills

Terry and Ros Matson purchased this beautiful pocket of land in the Adelaide hills, with a historic mud brick cottage, 20 years ago from Terry’s dad.
A migrant German family had built the cottage out of mud and straw in the 1890‘s. Local stringy bark trees provided wood for roofing rafters and slat wood ceilings both which still remain as evidence of an era when money was hard to come by. ‘Making do’ with what nature provided was a necessity not an option but the thermal qualities of the mud brick walls, which retain heat in winter and cool the cottage in summer are still appreciated.
