A&C Residence

The new owners wished to update the previous renovations from a somewhat dated 80’s interior to something more contemporary but were unsure how best to proceed. Taking clues from the unique heritage of the building the suggested design brief was to create a contemporary space with art deco influences and a Hollywood style glamour reminiscent of this period. Opulent materials such as marble and brass, bold black and white colour schemes, and geometric pattern and symmetry were combined to achieve the desired outcome.

New timber floors were laid in a rich walnut colour giving a strength to the base layer of the apartment. A plush velvet, cut pile carpet in a pale grey was selected for the bedrooms and pale grey wall colour throughout lends cohesion to each room. The kitchen layout was redesigned to include a central island with striking marble bench tops, beautiful, brushed brass fixtures and a stunning feature pendant light. A smoky mirrored splashback reflects some of the stunning views of the city skyline.

The adjacent dining and living spaces have a mix of leathers, linen, marble, horn, and brass to create a luxurious yet and inviting feeling. When you are not engaged with the view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge the custom designed joinery provides a focal point in the room, whilst also providing storage and a subtle dark background for the television. Layers of pattern and accent colours are added via the textural rug, scatter cushions and artworks. The clients existing dining table and sideboard were refinished in a satin ebony and brass detailing, with custom dining chairs in velvet and art deco fabric.

The ensuite bathroom mixes timeless selections of black, white and brass. With strong geometric repetition in the marble mosaic floor tiles, classic subway tiles and an art deco yet contemporary wall sconce. Through to the adjoining master bedroom that where it was all about creating symmetry, this features an opulent custom velvet bedhead with feature trim from Catherine Martin’s Metropolis range, glossy black furniture and crystal bedside table lamps. Add a custom armchair in fabric that captures not only the rich decorative nature of Art Deco but also its geometric modernism.

This apartment renovation has exceeded the clients expectations both in functionality and the glamorous end result, and it also provides a special nod to the history and timeless style of the building in which it is found.
