QuarterHouse 1
This prototype for a micro house to sit on the typical quarter acre block in suburban Perth was the rst model constructed for a series of compact dwellings that are to be fabricated using minimal quantities and cost-effective materials.
The simplicity of the design celebrates the construction approach. This building was designed and built as an exercise in carpentry, with the visible roof structure celebrated as a deliberate alternative to the generic WA builder approach of eaves gutters and painted barge-boards. The cladding is in a proprietary insulated render system, and all was designed to meet modular dimensions of the timber and board sizes.
The plan was designed to a minimal footprint, 70 square metres that was permitted by the local authority for use as an ancillary dwelling on a block already developed with a main residence.
External spaces feature a timber deck and pergola structure that provides breakout into the garden and alfresco living. The house does not feel cramped, with lofty ceilings and simple concepts to kitchen, bedroom and and bathroom spaces.
Designed as an investment property with a palette of internal and external material selections, this model showcases contemporary, cost effective modern design with well-resolved junctions and nishes.
