An Earth-Toned Mid-Century Marvel | Wahroonga

An earth-toned mid-century marvel on Sydney’s leafy north shore.

The clients wanted the house to be fruity and fun, but with a rational and cohesive design. They wanted to honour the traditional ’50s architecture but add an eclectic, creative twist. For the architect, the direction was simple: mid-century details with tactile, colourful and contemporary touches.

While there were challenges around every corner from asbestos, window frames acting as ceiling support, no insulation, leaking roof. The house came together beautifully, with several standout moments peppered throughout. A large, chestnut-toned island bench was placed in the living area to ground the space, while sandy coloured floor tiles from GatherCo were used throughout the house to create continuity and a sense of warmth.
