Birchgrove House

Additions to the front of an existing house.

This design is about the relationship of a house to its garden. When entering the front gate one enters into a large courtyard garden & you directly face a single storey house. The scale of the garden dwarfs the house, & one is allowed to wander from the gate to the house, the route is not defined.

The scale of the house is intentionally lower than the garden, & the strong horizontal emphasis is to balance the strong verticals of the Palm Trees.

Joinery is used as wall elements, that control the space & block overlooking views from neighbours.
