'Castlebrook' Oakbank

A country estate with a tincture of luxury.

Set well away from the main road, under a canopy of eucalypts, this classically proportioned and detailed home successfully blends understated refinement with country living.

Siting of the house towards the rear of the property was purposely selected to form a balance between the lifestyle of the clients supporting a growing family whilst accommodating the working life of a horse property with paddocks, horse arena and associated shedding.

Passive design making the most of the winter sun, was paramount to the brief and is achieved through considered orientation of the home within its setting and the specific placement of room locations within the design. This not only achieves environmental efficiency but also promotes a comfortable and efficient living style through the organised use of space.

Constructed of Mt Gambier Limestone with sweeping verandahs and tapered limestone columns, a striking arched door frame surrounded by detailed bevelled quoins leads you into an expansive entry through to an open formal lounge overlooking a terrace. Cruciform in plan, the private areas such as study and bedrooms have been placed on the cooler south side of the house, with the master bedroom suite, dressing room and ensuite to the east, capturing the morning sun.

Open plan family spaces accommodating all the workings of family and rural life occupy the north aspect of the home. A sun filled sunken living area projecting out from this face, engages with the outdoors through a series of double glazed arched windows. Solid limestone walls with raked ceiling and a travertine limestone floor adds to the al fresco atmosphere of this space.

Traditional in appearance, functional in design and promoting a healthy, modern living style.
