Dulwich Hill House

The primary principles of design were:
• Increase the visual and physical connection to green space
• Facilitate functional activation of green space / landscape
• Harness passive solar design principles
• Utilise and enhance existing built character by refurbishment or reuse of existing elements
• Harvest and provide internal connective space, which allows for physical separation of user whilst allowing visual connectivity.

To realise these design principles, the house was opened up towards the rear of the property, creating a more family friendly garden and making the most of the northerly aspect of the house. The demolition of the redundant laundry building, large metal shed and concrete driveway provided a great opportunity for a new inter-connected landscaped garden with a good size lawn. Pushing the small extension towards the NW boundary also allowed the maximisation of the garden space whilst the new extension was proposed to sit up hard along the boundary line, avoiding dark unused space due to a neighbouring garage building. This provided the opportunity for a much-desired separate access to the home office via the side access path, providing a clear separation of home and business.
