G House

G house was completed in late 2013 designed as two identical singular family homes on a large plot for a mother and son. It is located in Bali’s now urbane and bustling commercial district of Seminyak. The plot is close to ocean and rice fields but surrounded by rampart development; and no substantial outward views. It is thus designed as an inward looking development creating an inner sanctum.

One house is designed for the son and the other for his mother; they reflect the surrounding sea & rice paddy hues through their interiors. The courtyard is formed using contemporary asian (Bali) style series of pavilions. A large open courtyard connected by shaded canopies, drawing its cue for traditional Balinese architecture is formed around a plunge pool, a strong solid stone wall and a 200 year old frangipani tree on each side. The first of the courtyard houses is with 2 bedrooms and a gym while the other is three bedrooms.

Tall single storey pavilions with varying volumes create lofty interior spaces. Full height operable windows create seamless indoor outdoor connectivity allowing cross ventilation and daylight to wash though. A long living and dining space opens out onto the deck and pool in the way the traditional veranda had in traditional colonial “black & white” and “Batavia” style architecture had throughout South East Asia.

Walls are designed as deep carved niches & alcoves to display the owner’s art and sculpture collection. Large bedroom pavilions house generous spaces and open plan ensuites, walk in robes and other spaces including a gym. An independent guest pavilion is located near the entry to allow easy access and maintain the occupant’s privacy. Materials were locally sourced and used in a contemporary way developed by local craftspeople.
