Villa Tangga

Villa Tanga in Canggu Bali was completed in late 2009. It was built as a place for entertainment for a repatriating Indonesian who spent many years in Los Angeles.

It draws from temple architecture as well as the “Villa Malaparte” in Capri. It is a contemporary Asian- island house encompassing a series of platforms and decks that allow the house to grow up into the hill. It is about seamless extensions of interior spaces and large “in between” places to live and entertain in a tropical climate.

The architecture is consciously making an effort to differentiate itself from the typical pastiche of recent Balinese buildings at the same time anchor its roots in Asia. It suggests contemporary island lifestyle which today’s Bali affords and In turn is a reflection of the client and his cultural diversity. The main off-white masonry volume is a strong base contrasted against the lightweight timber pavilions which it supports. Large sliding window walls and bronze mesh screens allow the smooth transitions between inner and outer space. Internally the ceilings echo the rolling waves of the ocean setting and the limestone floor the sandy beaches of Bali. While large partly shaded pool and terraces form a foreground to the wild surf beach views to the south south-west.

A series of grassed steps resembling rice paddy fields and a grand stair resembling temple steps are used to integrate and position the villa into its site. Natural light is used to guide the dweller through the house and up to the roof where panoramic views and the famous Bali sunset can be seen. As a counter balance and in contrast to the main villa an outhouse grows out from the hill to house the staff quarters, forming a kind of “little brother”. These two parts bind the immediate landscape into a cohesive master plan on a large one acre site.
