Glenn Lake House | Kitchen

A small peninsula on Glen Lake, crowded with ad hoc cottages built over generations, has become a cherished summer reunion spot for the clients’ extended family. In spite of their own small plot, the owners wished to host their family of six and then some, all without altering the character of the beloved community. Only 425 square feet of buildable area was permitted by zoning, but approval was won for the larger footprint with a stepped front façade that maintained grandfathered setbacks. On approach, the camp appears a charming, single-story cottage in tune with its surroundings. Its large fireplace and staggered façade provide strategic shrouding, allowing light to enter while hiding the neighboring cottages and directing views toward the lake beyond. Emerging from the deck is a stone staircase that carves out the dramatic hillside, defining a walkout patio while shielding it from view. This combination of hidden and revealed elements delivers the soothing sense of seclusion in nature, steps away from friends and family. The home’s exterior features sustainably preserved cedar siding with sousugiban battens, motor-operable windows enable passive cooling, and traditional rainchains to elegantly direct runoff to into raingardens that buffer the lake edge.
