Hawkstone Street House

The design for this simple addition responds specifically to the lack of access to Northern light. A low roof is slotted under the existing roof fabric of a 1930’s bungalow in Cottesloe. The roof to the addition floats above this intermediate roof and uses well protected clerestory glazing.
The existing fabric of the house has been reconfigured to provide an en suite and bathroom within the kitchen space of the old building envelope. The existing kitchen fireplace provides storage for both new bathrooms. Cabinetwork has been inserted in the master bedroom to provide a private entrance to the en suite.
The materials used internally are light and airy, both to contrast the existing house and also to extend this access to natural light. Raw form ply is used to compliment the more refined materials selected and to stitch the old and new together. Old doorways to the existing lean-to are reframed as cabinetwork.
A pair of large pivot doors allow a connected flexible room to function differently through the day and also through the life cycle of the home (originally as a rumpus for the kids, later as a connected study area and possible a fourth bedroom for guests or additional kids).
