Inside Outside House

The Fitzroy North House was born from the concept of melding modern urban living with the rich history that is Fitzroy in Melbourne.

From the street, the unassuming Victorian single-front terrace home occupies a double-fronted block bounded tightly by its neighbours. Inside tells a story of contemporary design, reflecting its occupants’ open, interactive and engaging lifestyle.

This family home aims to capture the essence of dense inner-city urban living, maximizing use of the site, whilst also providing a sense of comfort, flexibility and tranquillity transforming the experience of its vibrant inner-city Fitzroy context into a place of calm enjoyment.

Once through the existing heritage facade, experiences are founded on three key design elements: space, light and air. Open spaces are filled with light, air and ever-changing spatiality, providing the home with a seamless connection with the exterior. The house asks the question: are you inside or are you outside?

Through the free movement of these elements throughout the space, the context of a house is deconstructed, providing a vital design signature to this project.
