This family home is configured as a split-level plan following the site gradient. A courtyard brings natural light into the long ground floor plan via generous glazed sliding doors and high ceilings. Secondary and service spaces run along the western side. The rear living pavilion is constructed using bricks salvaged from demolition of the original cottage to bring texture, thermal mass and a connection to the history of the site. A fixed timber blade canopy creates a shadow play of filtered light on the brickwork. Cost effectiveness was a key consideration and is reflected in the materiality and detailing. Prefabricated roofs panels reduced construction time. Fibre cement and colorbond cladding were used on the larger, less visible facades to reduce cost and maintenance. Steel work and timber on the north and south facades which address the street and backyard and are most visible are detailed to a higher level.
