Immersed amongst the existing treetop canopies and bushland, Picton Arthouse balances an openness with a sense of enclosure. Together with the owner’s extensive art collection that captured key moments in their own life journey, a primary and driving core objective was to be able to weave these treasures amongst the architectural form. The interior spaces then become animated both internally in one way, while also being brought to life by the changing landscape that the home sits within. Running perpendicular along the site, the resulting form takes advantage of the width of the site, optimising views outward and ensuring a consistent connection to both natural light and ventilation remains present throughout. The overall materiality and created feeling then comes together in response to the existing context. An established language that contrasts robustness and one that sits lightly on the earth, inspires the result. In capturing a connection to place, people and time, the layering of pieces that elicit memory amongst the new surrounding further captures a unique personal expression of the owners.
