Cavelle- Dubbo

Answering the brief was an organic process starting with the idea of splitting the programme into two wings of yin and yang, a sleeping wing (yin) and a living/entertaining wing (yang). Each wing runs east to west across the site taking full advantage of the north sun to the rear of the property. The wings are connected by a circulation path creating a breezeway and dividing the negative space between the two wings into two courtyard spaces. These courtyards enable connection to the landscape from all main living spaces and bedrooms.

Both wings are simple structures echoing the traditional Australian vernacular with pitched roofs and eaves designed to allow maximum winter sun and prevent summer sun within the dwelling. The roof of the breezeway acts as a large box gutter collecting roof water to be treated and re used on site. The yang wing is lined with highlight louvres to encourage breeze and filtration of fresh air across the living spaces.

Large thermal mass blade walls are used as bookends on the east and west of both wings to create privacy, minimise winter wind & insulate the living spaces from hot westerly sun. The garage is located on the south/west corner of the site to assist with insulation from the western sun.
