FAMILY ENTERTAINER WITH AN ECO EDGE

FAMILY ENTERTAINER WITH AN ECO EDGE
Built in the 1990s this family home in one of Sydney’s bayside locations, had served its residents well. However, now that the children were young adults the owners decided it was time to upgrade their home to cater for their growing family and friends in a modern and sophisticated environment.

Bidding at a school auction, the homeowners secured a consultation with design firm St James Whitting to discuss ways in which the home could be modernised inside and out, including a new outdoor room and garden space.

The design team at St James Whitting worked within the existing footprint of the house, upgrading the two bathrooms, kitchen, dining and sitting rooms. The sitting and dining rooms were transposed to create more appropriate space planning and traffic flow.

The outdoor pergola was demolished, and a new outdoor room featured Out Deco decorative screens and Gloss wood pre finished timber lining boards, was constructed to provide space for relaxing, cooking and dining. The garden was re-landscaped to include an L-shaped seating arrangement with a paved area and fire pit – the perfect addition for larger gatherings. The former clothes line was removed and relocated to maximise the space and a new lawn was laid to add softness and comfort to the outdoors. A large, existing tree was retained to provide shade to the garden and new perimeter planting softens the surrounding fence line and adds more greenery to the space.

The new dining room area windows were replaced with St James Whitting Ebonize coloured French doors, which now lead out from the dining room to the new entertaining space. The closed-in kitchen is now open-plan, providing a family-friendly cooking, eating and entertaining space with functional storage facilities. Materials include Silestone benchtops, natural marble splashbacks, natural timber veneer joinery and stainless-steel tapware and appliances; all selected for their eco-friendly attributes including zero-VOC paints from the St James Whitting Elementals Collection coloured by Resene Paints for the interior and exterior scheme.

The existing red Jarrah floor was re-stained to allow the colour to work-in with the new scheme and maintain the existing floor. The palette throughout features the client’s choice of charcoal and white tones with warm timber accents. LED lighting features throughout the home.

The interiors were styled by the team at St James Whitting featuring limited edition artwork Glacial Drift by Catherine Whitting, Signature homewares La Palmera by Kate St James complemented with custom curated products from Villeroy & Bosch and Country Road.
