Luanja Homestead Berry NSW
2017 National Trust Continuing Tradition award winner!
Homestead built in the Neo-Georgian style as would have been built in Sydney and surrounds at around 1832-38. Inspired by houses designed by John Verge. What you can't see here though and would least expect is sustainability. This house runs on on solar electrical energy (not on the grid) has wood fired hydronic heating and is deliberately designed to be completely timeless lowering the chances of major alteration or demolition.
Unfortunately there is no measure for embedded energy, the energy cost of making something. When buildings are made from materials that don't corrode or breakdown easily and look good in degraded form they are far less likely to be replaced or demolished. This means the energy cost of production is extended beyond one or two generations and maximises the embedded energy.
