Manly Pacific - Featured in 'The Design Files'

Located in one of Sydney’s best beachside locations, this recently renovated 3 bedroom / 2-bathroom apartment has stunning views over Manly. Our collaborative approach with the owner was to achieve an easy to maintain home and reflect its beachside environment. By re-configuring the floor plan and removing some internal walls, we were able to achieve a flow through connection to the beach outside. A new kitchen, study, bedroom joinery, two bathrooms, lounge area and lighting plan were some of the key changes that gave the home an inviting and contemporary ambiance.

The client came to us with a brief to redesign and renovate their existing apartment and address the spatial planning to create a functional and restful space for the family to enjoy. We took our inspiration from the local area, the warm neutral soft tones of the beach and the deep green/blue from the ocean and wanted these elements to flow through the apartment and connect it to the outside environment.

There were a number of design challenges as a result of renovating within an apartment building. Floor finishes and levels within an apartment and a low ceiling height had to be carefully considered. The existing reflected ceiling plan didn’t allow sufficient lighting to illuminate the apartment, so a slimline false ceiling was added, partnered with narrow lighting fixtures and feature pendants over the kitchen island and dining table. We worked closely with the strata management from the beginning, and a sound engineer to find flooring solutions that worked with the existing concrete slab.

Often a problem can lead to a design solution that you might not have thought about, and in this case a structural column became the design feature within the kitchen, the column was reshaped and tiled to create softer visual lines that carried through to the shape of the bench and desk. The light colour palette and finishes make the space appear larger and are offset by the stronger colours used in the fabric and furniture selection.

All building and strata codes were adhered to and we achieved our client’s budget and tight deadline of a completed apartment in 3 months.
