Brunswick West Gables - Alterations & Additions

Brunswick West Gables is a thoughtful renovation of a once cramped and dark heritage cottage, now transformed into a modern and functional home that accommodates the evolving needs of our clients and their two sons. The two front rooms of the original heritage home have been preserved, along with cherished features such as the façade detailing, ceiling roses, stained glass windows, and fireplace mantles. A new ground and first-floor extension significantly enhances the home’s liveability.

A new mudroom entry along the south boundary provides convenient access to the laundry, pantry, and outdoor storage, offering practical solutions for a busy family. The spacious open-plan kitchen, living, and dining areas are bathed in natural light, with timber-framed windows opening out to the native landscape of the rear yard. The timber frames, joinery, and green kitchen, along with selected fittings and furniture, mirror the natural tones of the surrounding olive and eucalyptus trees. An exposed aggregate hydronic concrete slab, paired with captured eastern sunlight, ensures both active and passive heating year-round.

The pale sage coloured first floor provides a tranquil retreat for the main bedroom and a work-from-home study, nestled amongst the trees. Spotted gum cladding and eucalyptus tones subtly update the home’s exterior, adding visual interest while maintaining harmony with the traditional streetscape, grounding the property in its surroundings.

This transformation has rekindled the owners’ love for their home, revitalising it for their family of four and offering a space that now fully supports their lifestyle.
