South Melbourne Restoration

At first glance, 15 Martin Street feels established rather than new. Behind its familiar weatherboard frontage lies a house that once teetered on the brink of ruin, its structure compromised after decades of vacancy and decay. What remained, however, revealed enough integrity to anchor a thoughtful restoration and extension.

The design begins with repair and patience. Where original fabric could be revived it was kept; the central staircase, ceiling roses and other heritage elements were carefully conserved and re-introduced. The front verandah, long lost, was rebuilt with reference to nearby period houses, giving the street elevation a quiet continuity with its neighbours.

Behind this restored face, the plan opens into a contemporary addition that rebalances light and space for modern life. A copper cladding was chosen for the extension, not for contrast, but for its capacity to age alongside the original materials. Inside, soaring ceilings and fireplaces harmonise with new moments such as a soft sage palette and a quartzite kitchen bench, grounding the house in both material and memory.

Steel-framed doors fold open to the garden and alfresco areas, bringing daylight deep into the living spaces and dissolving the boundary between inside and out. Solar panels and keyless access speak to performance without spectacle, letting comfort be felt rather than boasted.

15 Martin Street is not a reinvention; it is a recalibration. The house had a history, and the new work makes space for what matters most: light, material presence, and a home that feels restored, settled and complete.
