The site is a sloping block containing mature blackbutt trees. The brief required a beachhouse / treehouse with some specific japanese elements to reference the clients' stint in Japan. The design is locked around a central axis which focuses on a stand of blackbutt trees at each of the three levels. The floor plate of the main level is a simple square (reflecting japanese purity) containing living areas, garage, stair (with shell gallery) and a protected courtyard which extends the living space westwards. Being elevated, the living space opens up to the trees and extends via a bridge to a square deck within them. Below this deck is a japanese bathhouse with sunken off form concrete bath. This square space opens to view the lower blackbutt trunks. Across a paved courtyard at the lower level is a bunkroom and second living space. The upper level has two bedrooms with a central bathroom. The shower is located at the end of the axis for views into the upper limbs of the trees. A cedar screen extends from below for modesty.
