East Fremantle Renovation & Extension
The design brief was ‘to update facilities and provide more space to suit a family of five; adding a modest contemporary extension, whilst respecting, restoring, and reinforcing the existing aesthetic and historical heritage of the house’.
The design solution was to remove an earlier rear addition, preserve the integrity of the original workers cottage and construct a new two storey addition to minimise the impact on the established rear garden and maintain existing large trees on the site.
The new stairwell was located to create a fulcrum between zones and flood light into the centre of the home. The open plan kitchen and dining room are positioned to command views to the garden and provide direct access to the north facing verandah.
The living room is stepped down to connect directly with the rear garden and to create a cosy atmosphere enhanced by the inclusion of a wood burning open fireplace.
Both the living and dining rooms have a northern aspect to maximise winter warmth.
The upper floor master bedroom suite and study features attic style ceilings and maximises both the view into the trees of the rear garden and the northern aspect over the surrounding roof tops.
Careful selection of materials both internally and externally together with thoughtful practical design and fine craftsmanship ensure the completed project is both extremely functional and ageless in style.
