The sentence our clients used to describe their Killcare House renovation was; ‘ a family home suitable for entertaining 20+ guests with more storage and a design that takes advantage of the views’

Perched on a hill in Killcare Heights sat a cedar-clad two storey cottage. This South facing block captured expansive views to the south-West overlooking Putty Beach and Barrenjoey Headland beyond.
his proposed alterations and additions to an existing residence consisted of creating four bedrooms, media room, open kitchen, dining & living areas that connected to existing entertaining spaces, and a new concrete pool. The proposed design is contemporary in nature yet is in keeping with the varied character, scale and design of the streetscape. It also considers the potential of the site, view sharing, privacy, landscaping, and its scale when viewed from the public domain.

The overall layout of the proposed alterations and additions where designed with passive solar design being a major influence on the spatial distribution and window placement. These include the position of habitable rooms, the grouping of living spaces and their relation to the amount of light able to access the room.

The living zones have been placed toward the Southern end of the dwelling improving the ocean views towards Barrenjoey Headland and allow for open plan living. These areas gained an increase in both indirect and direct natural light and cross ventilation.

External materials and finishes were selected to consist of natural elements including weatherboard cladding and white trims, natural stone and timber finishes. This spectrum of colour is sensitive to its natural environment and surrounding street character.
