Glen Iris was a wonderfully collaborative two-stage project, beginning with the rear garden before extending into the front landscape. From the outset, there was a strong sense of trust and creative freedom, allowing us to explore ideas that pushed beyond the expected while remaining deeply connected to the clients' lifestyle and the character of their home.

The rear garden embraces a relaxed, contemporary cottage aesthetic, filled with movement, texture and seasonality. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the design process was gently encouraging the client to step beyond a predominantly green and white palette and introduce carefully curated colour throughout the garden. The result is a landscape rich in personality, where flowering moments, foliage contrasts and changing seasonal displays create a garden that feels alive and engaging throughout the year.

Large organic-shaped stepping stones weave through the landscape, creating an inviting sense of discovery while encouraging a slower, more immersive experience of the garden. Equally important was respecting the site's history. Rather than starting again, we chose to work with and celebrate the existing garden framework, retaining a remarkable collection of mature camellias and rhododendrons that bring character, heritage and a sense of permanence rarely found in contemporary gardens.

Throughout the project, creativity and practicality worked hand in hand. Existing outdoor structures were transformed through the considered use of tiled surfaces, elevating their appearance while remaining mindful of budget. Future stages will introduce additional bespoke features, including illuminated poolside elements and custom outdoor entertaining spaces that will further enrich the garden experience.

One particularly nostalgic design move involved incorporating sculptural mounds of Zoysia grass—a plant that reminds me of my own childhood. These playful forms quickly became a favourite feature of the project, bringing softness, movement and a touch of whimsy to the landscape. The clients loved them so much they wanted even more.

The front garden focused on achieving a sense of generosity and arrival while balancing the practical needs of a busy family. Careful planning allowed for lawn, layered planting, vehicle accommodation and circulation without compromising the overall garden experience. Existing red brick detailing was thoughtfully retained and repurposed, helping to connect the renewed landscape to the home's original character.

Environmental stewardship also played an important role. A mature Liquidambar tree, home to a resident owl family, became a focal point of the design. Lighting was carefully positioned to celebrate the tree's structure while ensuring minimal disturbance to its nocturnal inhabitants.

Perhaps my favourite aspect of this garden is its sense of abundance. Fruit trees are woven throughout the landscape in unexpected locations, rewarding exploration and creating moments of delight for family and guests alike. It is a garden designed not only to be admired, but to be experienced—a place to wander, gather, harvest and create memories for years to come.
