Inner City Tropical Paradise

When these homeowners renovated their kitchen, dining and living areas, they knew the garden needed to feel just as considered as the spaces inside. But their outdoor area was not supporting the way they wanted to live.

The Challenge

The neighbouring deck and entertainment area overlooked the backyard, leaving the space feeling exposed and lacking privacy. The lower level of the home also felt dark, but the clients still wanted to maintain a lush green outlook from inside.

Outside the dining room sat a bare dirt patch where turf struggled to survive beneath established trees, making the space feel disconnected and unusable. The entry planting and indoor greenery also felt tired and in need of renewal.

The clients wanted a tropical inspired retreat that felt private, welcoming and connected to their newly renovated home.

Our Approach

We carefully balanced privacy, greenery and light throughout the design. Taller planting was strategically positioned to screen views from neighbouring properties, while lower planting zones were used where access to sunlight and outlook were important.

The previously unusable dirt area outside the dining room became a key feature of the transformation. We introduced a paved seating area and new stairs to resolve the level changes, helping the indoor spaces flow naturally into the garden. The result is a warm, inviting space that captures the winter sun and encourages everyday outdoor living.

Throughout the garden, layered tropical planting created a lush and calming atmosphere, while refreshed entry planting and carefully selected pots elevated the overall arrival experience.

The Result

The garden now feels like a true extension of the home.

What was once overlooked and disconnected has become a private tropical retreat designed for entertaining, relaxing and spending time together as a family. The space feels greener, lighter and more functional, while still maintaining privacy in a dense inner city setting.

The result is a garden that works beautifully for the way the clients live today and one that feels connected to every part of their renovated home.
