Award-winning New-York style bathroom

This stunning bathroom won the HIA CSR NSW 2011 Bathroom Design Award.

The clients were keen to introduce a modern Australian style with an element of Manhattan, where they had lived for many years, to their new bathroom while creating a new space that was open, light and spacious. Designer John Spiteri has utilised the existing floor space and incorporated modern fittings and fixtures, with energy efficient products, to provide the owners with a functional and low-maintenance space that is also visually engaging.
This project was unusual from the start as the client was based in New York so all planning, design and correspondence was conducted via the internet. The client particularly wanted to recreate a Manhattan feel in the bathroom to remind them of home. Within days of the clients landing in Australia, work had started on the renovation.
The new design makes fantastic use of the space which actively assists these busy homeowners at peak times. Practical layout and functional inclusions are matched with sophisticated finishes for a true sense of luxury.
A generous, custom-built vanity provides ample storage and was designed to have minimal impact on the bathroom’s floor space. Its size allows for more than one user at any one time and provides a sense of individual space. The large mirrored shaving cabinet above the vanity hides additional storage for those daily-use items and helps to evoke a feeling of spaciousness within the bathroom.
Privacy is heightened via the inclusion of a dwarf wall which visually divides the toilet area from the rest of the bathroom. A custom-made, frameless shower screen was incorporated into the design as a feature item which defines the shower space but creates the illusion of spaciousness with its clean lines and modern finish.
The Housing Industry Association judges praised the well laid-out bathroom and commented on the creative design features which they felt generated an interesting space. “A balanced appearance of square-edged design, organic shapes, and mosaics delivers a relaxed ambiance. Harmonious colours and a quality choice of materials have produced a great result,” they added.
