Frame Terrace
The project transforms a small Victorian terrace into a three-storey contemporary family home with three bedrooms and a variety of internal and living zones. The retained heritage front shows very little of the additions. The new built form is clothed in a stealthy dark skin, minimising its formal presence.
Frames are introduced at key thresholds/transitions (kitchen, rear garden, leading edge of the roof over the roof terrace) and to frame views (roof terrace open picture window) as a conceptual ordering device.
Sustainability is an important consideration for all projects and passive solar environmental design has been used to great effect. The large frame over the upper level roof terrace provides for a covered outdoor room while providing solar shading for the internal living space. Cross ventilation, double glazing, high levels of insulation, minimized air-conditioned spaces and non toxic and low VOC materials are all incorporated into the project.
In addition to passive design and technical sustainability features the project reflects a practice belief in compact urban living. The residence has been transformed from a modest two bedroom house to a three bedroom family dwelling with a variety of interior and exterior living spaces.
