Skin-Box house
Winner Residential Award 2014 and Highly Commended TIDA Australia Kitchen Awards 2015 !!
A contemporary light-filled home featuring timber lined ceiling and joinery, a triple-walled polycarbonate external first-floor skin and a deceptively spacious interior-exterior living zone.
The brief originally was to renovate the house and add a master suite of bedroom, robe and ensuite whilst retaining two bedrooms and bathroom, and included a new kitchen, walk-in pantry, renovated living area, courtyard, and new roof deck to take advantage of sweeping city views.
Importantly, the clients were keen to renovate the whole house using a material palette that would envelop the senses and create a contemporary feel, and to radically improve the indoor-outdoor relationship.
The design parti strengthens the zoned living areas to provide retreat space for the occupants. The new bedrooms and ensuite above are wrapped in an external skin of polycarbonate which cantilevers above the living room, hovering gently over the garden space. The relationship to the garden at the ground level is dramatically transformed through the minimization of structure, and a fully glazed wall. This glazing, together with a flush threshold where sills disappear, and consistent floor treatments, dissolve the barrier between the living area and the garden. Timber ceiling and joinery are matched with vertical timber battening to the garden fence providing a material relationship between interior and exterior.
