Modern Studio Apartment Renovation
This long and narrow 1998 apartment was unimaginatively plain, poorly planned, super dated and in urgent need of a revamp.
The brief was to create a space that was ultra contemporary, upbeat, welcoming, and truly made the most of the limited space available.
To achieve this, Nouvelle’s designer thought completely out of the box to create an overall design that is now highly aesthetic, functional and meets the clients’ brief perfectly.
Utilising inobtrusive white cabinets matching the walls, curves and light timber features, created the perfect backdrop to enhance the clients’ substantial collection of modern pop art. Contemporary design elements such as polished cement floors and terrazzo tiles not only meet the brief, they also make for easy maintenance too.
The real heroes are the innovative and creative layout and fit-out that not only maximise the utilization of the available space but also manage to make the space look considerably larger and much more welcoming and user-friendly. In addition, yellow was taken from the artwork as the perfect stand-out colour, used widely throughout the rooms to create a vibrantly cohesive theme.
Now, the first thing you see when entering the space, is a beautiful, curved timber TV unit surrounded by artwork, instead of dull, plain walls with random furniture and décor.
This then leads to the lounge area, then the dining, and finally the kitchen, all flanked by a built-in storage unit that runs the full length of the wall, from the front door to the back of the room and is cleverly divided for the functions corresponding to each section of the room.
The now unrecognisable kitchen was completely re-imagined and boasts a full size, fully integrated French door fridge, a wall oven, built-in washer/dryer, generous semi-walk-in pantry, dedicated area for coffee machine, integrated dishwasher and an abundance of drawers.
Similarly, the bathroom now looks like one straight out of a design magazine. Completely reconfigured, it no longer needs to incorporate a laundry. Now the space is able to accommodate a shower in an attractive semi-freestanding curved bath with a frameless glass shower blade, a discrete in-wall cistern WC, as wells as a custom basin area with wall-to-wall mirror door shaving cabinets. Fun, achromatic terrazzo style tiles for the feature wall and vanity are right on trend and create a cohesive upbeat look with the rest of the apartment. For the main walls a muted single colour tile enhances the terrazzo’s effect and helps to make the room look larger. The overall effect is calmly funky with a spa feel.
Not having been done with creative design in the first section of the apartment, our designer set to creating a bedroom that truly displays brilliance in design. The space now contains not one, but two independent study desks, as well as two additional built-in wardrobes, and a pull-down Queen bed with built-in bed-side tables and storage. In place of the old tired external door and vertical blinds, is a new, stylish, external glass door with built-in blinds. This space has now become a comfortable and appealing room that is cleverly multi-functional, whether sleeping, working, relaxing, or working out.
The final result, with the addition of a generous addition of décor items and greenery, is a totally alluring, fun and welcoming home, that is the complete opposite to the one we first encountered.
