Mt Gravatt house extensions

This postwar pavilion style house was our own residence when the first renovations were done. After we added a new swimming pool we replaced the old asbestos-cement roof with a low slung corrugated iron curved roof covering large outdoor decks on the steep site. 10 years later I also designed the downstairs granny flat extensions for the new owner.

This concrete swimming pool with wrap-around paving and deck on a sloping site was essentially an upscaled replacement of an old vinyl-lined above-ground pool in the same location.

Changing the roof line over the existing walls gave me the opportunity to introduce a high strip of windows to dramatic effect.

In this opened-up living area, part of the kitchen wall was left in place as a blade wall to screen the kitchen from the entry and also to form a natural connection with the rest of the house.

A bold colour on the blade wall that extends down the length of the passage adds drama to what is a very simple floor plan. It also ties the different functional areas together.

Narrow hallways are dead circulation space. Widen them to turn them into a functional area as library, art gallery, home office, or for general storage. Here one bedroom wall was moved to allow for linen and bookshelves, breaking up what was a claustrophobic passage.

The raised roof provided a perfect gap for high level windows to take in light and treetop views on a side of the house that otherwise would only look into retaining walls and an embankment.
