Award Winning Small Bathroom Design
KBDi Kitchen and Bathroom Design Awards 2014 – Small Bathroom Design (SA)
This family of four were looking for a bathroom renovation to create more space and provide more storage to ensure the space was suitable for their use for many years in the future. Previously updated in the 1980s, the bathroom was sorely in need of a re-design to meet the needs of the family today.
With the aim to include a separate shower and bath as well as a decent-sized vanity and toilet, the challenge was to create a bathroom that was minimalistic and contemporary with a calm, relaxing ambiance with enough space to incorporate all the items on the owners’ wish list. To give the impression of a larger room, large format tiles were used and the tile line was taken right to the ceiling. Square-look accessories and tapware enhance the modern outlook of the bathroom while the wall-hung, double-bowl vanity is a must during the busy morning rush.
Dark wall tiles on the back wall contrast beautifully with white gloss tiles on the side walls and help give the impression of an elongated space. The tiles were laid horizontally to increase this perception and add a sense of proportion. An existing skylight was retained with a new window and awning installed together with a three-in-one unit for heat and light.
A clever idea from the designer has made the most of every centimetre available in this bathroom. A false-framed wall was created to house the toilet’s in-wall cistern which made it possible to include a large bath niche for the freestanding bath. A walk-in shower, new layout and expert choice in products and materials means the bathroom is now light, bright, airy and open.
