Halls Head Residence (2007)
HALLS HEAD RESIDENCE 2007 | Yael K Designs
AWARD WINNING HOUSE: BEST HOUSE + BEST RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS 2007 (BDAWA), For more information see: http://www.yaelk.com.au/halls-head-residence-2007
The clients, typical Baby boomers, required a relaxed and casual ‘resort style’ home with all the living space on the ground floor. With the intention that the home would take them into retirement and beyond.
The upper floor is dedicated to overseas guests who visit on a regular basis.
Located on the Mandurah canals, the expansive triangular shaped north facing block was well suited for the relaxed style of home requested by the owners. The designer took full advantage of the superb orientation of the large 1500m² block as every room in the house soaks in the beautiful northern sun as well as the views across the canals.
Focusing on the combination of practical elements, balance and points of interest, the designer created an interesting, spacious and functional, yet indulgent home. With easy living on the ground floor, this ensured the owners would enjoy their home for many years to come.
Infused with Japanese undertones, the contemporary structure commands a strong statement from the street. The individual pods give definition to the roof and custom designed fascias conceal the gutters, giving the house a distinctive and timeless facade.
From the canals the house is a show stopper. Five masonry rendered soldier columns make a statement whilst screening the neighboring property. The house is perched high on the block using the land to create a journey down to the jetty or to ‘catch’ a seat on the way to watch the dolphins. The designer worked closely with the landscape architect to create the terracing down to the river.
Comfortable all year round temperatures have been facilitated through taking advantage of the northern aspect and sprawling the house across the widest part of the block. The strategically positioned remote controlled louvered windows provide cross ventilation, creating a cooling effect. The use of Aircell wall insulation and the light coloured roof, also contribute environmental consideration in the design.
The designer has a created a holiday lifestyle by seamlessly merging indoor and outdoor living. The clever placement of the outdoor lounge, alfresco dining, gym, master suite and day bed have further enhanced this. The 18m lap pool is perched at the foot of the gym, which comes complete with large shallow area for lazing around on a hot balmy night. After an exhausting day cruising the canals on their luxury launch, with a glass of wine in hand, oh what a lifestyle.
The living, dining and kitchen set the stage for total comfort. The built in breakfast bar, handy butler’s pantry, cocktail bar and study, all unfold into one space where the clients can share activities on a day to day basis.
The exotic master suite is on the ground floor in its own zone. It incorporates an indulgent open plan bathroom, separated by a romantic floating pebble fire place, suspended on a mosaic arm. The TV is on a remote swivel arm, which can be viewed from the spa, couch and bed (at the request of the clients).
A private courtyard off the master suite is linked to the day bed giving the owners their own private space where they can take nap. This enables the guests to indulge themselves in the theatre, a work out in the fully equipped gym, take a swim in the heated lap pool or wine tasting in the cellar………….why not? The guests can also retreat upstairs to one of 3 private guest suites which come complete with internet bar and laptop and international power supplies. A wet bar on the landing is provision for the midnight thirst or morning coffee.
The laundry was given special treatment as the clients have access to an abundance of fresh flowers and needed a special sink, with workbench and special storage, for their collection of amazing vases. An abundance of storage has been provided both inside the home as well as in the three grand garages and boat shed.
Common sense, inspiration and attention to detail result in a home which will embrace the owners for years to come. It is truly an exotic resort for the baby boomers and their friends to enjoy.
