Swanbourne Duplex (2012)
AWARD WINNING HOUSE: BEST HOUSE (national and state) 2012/2011 (BDAWA + BDA): http://asp-au.secure-zone.net/v2/index.jsp?id=15/22/3987&startPage=28

Infused in this Swanbourne duplex is a daring mix of natural and polished textures, along with volumes of glass capturing the Northern aspect right throughout the homes, removing the darkness that a common wall can normally incite.
By pooling their resources and dividing a block, two friends were able to each get a small slice of beachside heaven.
Client one wanted a sound investment, practicality and function before detail. While client two wanted a wow factor, edgy yet still to be functional, not to mention they each had a need for storage of their toys for playing in the surf.
Both houses were on tight blocks, and even tighter budgets. Less is best, was Yael Kurlansky of Yael K Designs recommendation to both clients, this would help the budget go further.
Freeing up the living areas was achieved by keeping the garages and storage in a basement with a shared driveway.
Open spaces unfold in each house as the split floor levels step down the steep block.
The natural palate of materials utilised; timber, stone, glass & concrete allowed for a timeless design.
By keeping the entries on opposite sides of the block, this created an individual house for each client, yet, it unified each project together to give a holistic street presence with a wow factor.
Client 1 received their family style home with a larger floor area to fit the requirements. Client 2 achieved the wow factor and met the remaining brief.
Each where delivered on budget!
