Two into one

This project converts a large two level Duplex into a single family residence. The original double brick duplex was built in the late 1940’s and had further additions to it in the 1970’s.
The owners engaged us to convert the duplex into a single residence for their young family, with a focus on modernizing the home with a fresh new material palette, adding plenty of natural light and creating a new indoor / outdoor link with a strong connection to the landscaping and backyard.
Both levels were extensively re-planned and developed to meet the owners brief. The bulky 1970’s additions to the front and rear were removed, and a large double height central gallery and dramatic staircase was formed to capture natural light from above. The removal of loadbearing walls on the lower level created the opportunity to design a feature ceiling, with concealed lighting between the existing and new structural beams.
A restrained neutral palette has been selected, incorporating natural timbers, black steel, terrazzo feature tiles and fresh white walls, complementing the existing external deep red bricks. Bespoke Joinery has been designed and built by Caravello Joinery to finish off the renovation. Extensive landscaping across the whole site was designed by Adam Robinson Designs to create a private rear yard garden for entertaining and compliment the existing streetscape at the front.
The builder Paul Fitzgerald of Hampstead Homes worked extremely hard throughout the 2021 Sydney COVID lockdowns and managed to successfully get the owners in before the Christmas Deadline.
