Beaumaris
The brief for this Classic 1960s Mid-Century house designed by Architect John Baird was to respect the features of the 1960s kitchen while bringing it into the 21st century. Our clients; one a graphic designer and the other an industrial designer, were avid collectors of iconic 60s furniture & industrial items, so we designed an iconic kitchen to display their collection whilst suiting the style of their house.
Colour was going to play an important role, so when we discovered the original red
hue of the cupboards hiding under a layer of beige, we decided to use this
as the starting point, with olive and white completing the retro palette. The owners collection of retro canisters not only works with the colour palette but, along with the stools, are a nod to the original 1960s style of the house.
Additional space was created in the same footprint by having a wall removed, providing a larger area that enhanced the sociability factor. The remaining intrusive structural column in the middle of the room was replaced with a timber screen that is both decorative and functional. A new bench next to it, provided an additional casual dining spot. A sliding door was installed to the existing laundry for easy access and an under-bench washer and dryer freed up valuable workspace; so this area has now become a combined butler’s pantry and laundry, ideal for use as an overflow from the main kitchen.
