Glen Iris
A carefully detailed, researched and refined, contemporary rear extension to an original Arts and Crafts house. As our clients were very interested in design and detailing and had an existing collection of furniture, artwork & lighting to be incorporated into the project, we created a design solution, colour palette and materials selection to embrace their style.
We used site restraints to our advantage - using recycled exterior red bricks on a boundary wall viewed from the kitchen as well as using the red bricks as the back wall of the cellar. We created a ‘library’, which assisted in the proportion of the casual living area as well as storage for the owner’s extensive collection of books.
In selecting finishes we created a Dark timber ‘box’ around the laundry wall and kitchen tall elements, we detailed the laundry door to be flush with the veneer wall – so this area reads as a dark solid, then the visual focus in is on the Statuarietto marble island bench.
In the original part of the house we were able to have minimal impact on the intact original features in the master bedroom – windows, fireplace architraves and skirting boards, by creating just one opening through to a new walk-in-robe and then ensuite bathroom.
All windows are double glazed in the new wing and an efficient ‘Rais’ woodheater has been installed to heat the new space.
Quality finishes were achieved through collaboration with building designers West Valentine from the outset of the project.
