Port Melbourne

Embracing the frantic pace of family life, the renovation of this Victorian terrace is warm and welcoming yet cool and contemporary, creating plenty of contrasts throughout the home.
As our clients love and appreciate good design, the bar was set high for their expectations to design and deliver on a tight budget. The overall brief was for a contemporary box at the rear of the house with lots of joinery to hide the mess of a busy family with young children. The space also had to link with the Victorian style of the house - we achieved this by extending the oak floors from the front of the original house to the new section at the rear. We also used Carrara marble in the kitchen, which was a common Victorian era marble. In addition, we created a dramatic wall of blonde timber joinery in the kitchen which extends up and across the ceiling to create drama, whilst hiding functional aspects of the kitchen out of sight in the open plan space.
We worked closely in collaboration with our clients to achieve the design as well as the look and feel they wanted. A base palette of whites, moody greys and pale timbers provides a pure, simple backdrop for hints of copper, pink and duck-egg blue (the owners favourite colour). The home also draws cues from its leafy surrounds, with sunlight streaming through a verdant central courtyard into the airy family room and spacious kitchen.
